Adoption Process

Meet and Adopt Your New Best Friend at DHS!

1. Adoption Applications. These applications help us learn about you and give us some insight as to which animal would be the best pet for you. We are looking for someone like you who owns their home or has permission from their landlord to have a pet; who keeps their pets current on vaccinations; who will keep their pet indoors; and who will treat it as a family member. Dog Adoption ApplicationCat Adoption Application.
2.

Timeframe: We ask for at least 24 hours from the time you submit a complete application for us to review your application.

3.

We make every effort to have all animals spayed or neutered before being adopted.

4.

The fee for adoption is $100 for cats and $175 for dogs and covers spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations such as FVRCP and DHLPP, as well as age appropriate testing such as heartworm and/or feline leukemia, and deworming medication.

5. You must be at least 21 years of age to adopt and provide written identification that includes name and current address.  This is waived on a case by case basis.
6.

All adult members of the adoptive household are required to take part in the decision.

7.

Giving animals as a surprise gift is not a good idea because it often times does not result in a successful adoption. It is best for everyone to have time to prepare themselves and their homes for the new family member.

8.

Adopters of other small mammals (domestic rabbits, rodents) and birds must have caging facilities that meet shelter approval. Domestic rabbits must be spayed or neutered.

9.

If at any time for any reason you are no longer able to care for the pet you are adopting, you must agree to return it to us.

10.

The Humane Society makes every effort to ensure that your adoption experience is a good one. We look forward to seeing you.

CONSIDER ADOPTING A SENIOR PET!

If you're thinking of adoption, you might be happier with a senior pet, bypassing the time-intensive training necessary for puppies and kittens and getting right down to quality time with a loving new friend.
