What's the best way to get in contact with DHS?
The best way to contact DHS is to call the shelter. If you don't speak to someone directly leave your name, number, and what your call is in reference to so that someone can get back to you as soon as possible. The phone number is 410-228-3090.
What is the adoption process like?
After you have filled out an application a member of the DHS staff will check that you have your landlord's approval (if you rent) to have an animal in your household, and also check your vet or personal reference. If you are the 1st person to have applied for the animal in question, and your application is approved, someone from DHS will give you a call early on in the week to let you know the pet is available. If you placed an application on an animal that already had an application you have the option to take the animal if the other application falls through and you are approved. The reason DHS uses the application process is to make sure that our animals get good homes.
Do I have to get my adopted pet spayed or neutered?
Yes, it is a condition of the adoption that you get your pet spayed or neutered. The population of animals in Dorchester County is already too high. The more new puppies that are born, the less the dogs already here have a chance.
My dog was picked up by animal control and taken to DHS, how do I get it back? Do I owe money?
In order to remove your dog from DHS you need a proof of rabies. If your dog has not had a rabies vaccination you will need to go to Choptank Animal Hospital and prepay for a Rabies Vaccination which you will take your animal to get as soon as it is released from DHS. Because space is limited in our shelter, and because it was necessary for us to care for your animal you will owe a fee. The cost of board will vary on the amount of time your pet spent in DHS.
Why isn't DHS open more hours?
DHS has a very small staff, and is desperate for more volunteers. Because of these factors DHS cannot be open all day, every day.If you would like to volunteer please stop by the shelter! It would be greatly appreciated!
What is volunteering at DHS like?
Volunteering at DHS is a very rewarding and fun experience! If you love animals, you'll love being at the shelter! I don't have time to volunteer, but I want to help! What can I do? Visit our Ways to Help Page and explore the different options. If you're part of a company or corporation you can help us out by sponsoring an DHS event, or website!
Is DHS the only place I can go to see adoptable pets?
No! Once a week a few DHS dogs or puppies make the journey to the Petsmart in Salisbury, MD.
Every Saturday from 12-4 (providing weather is travel safe) you can visit a few of our dogs, fill out an application, or make a donation!
I think that an animal may be being mistreated, abused, or neglected. What should I do?
Contact Animal Control immediately! It is extremely important that you let them know if the welfare of an animal is being endangered. Their number is 410-228-3083!
I have a question that isn't on this page yet, what should I do?
