This is one of the most rewarding of all volunteer activities. By providing space in your home and your heart, you are increasing that animal's chances of adoption. No more kennel stress. Potential adopters often mistake the characteristics of kennel stress as the animal's real personality and overlook them as being undesirable. Animals in foster homes are happier, calmer and more adoptable. Sometimes an animal needs a little help to be prepared for adoption. In addition, you are giving that animal what it needs most: time to find a forever home.
To apply to foster a homeless animal, complete the Foster Application Form. To apply on-line, click on "Contact Us". In the comments section indicate your interest in fostering and provide the answers to the questions in the Foster Application Form. To apply by mail, simply complete and submit the Foster Application Form to: DHS, PO Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613 or fax it to 410-228-3979.
| Why should I have my pet spayed or neutered? |
It's Good for your Pet's Health
- Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
- Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat.
- Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first heat.
- Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.
It's Good For You
- In most cases, spaying and neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions.
- Neutering cats makes them less likely to spray and mark territory.
- Spaying a dog or cat eliminates her heat cycle. Heat lasts an average of six to 12 days, often twice a year, in dogs and an average of six to seven days, three or more times a year, in cats. Females in heat can cry incessantly, show nervous behavior, and attract unwanted male animals.
- Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than do those who have been spayed or neutered.
- Spaying and neutering allows pets to develop better social skills, including getting along with other animals in the household.
It's Better For The Community
- Communities spend millions of tax dollars to control unwanted animals.
- Neutering makes pets less likely to roam the neighborhood, run away, or get into fights.
- Irresponsible breeding contributes to the problem of dog bites and attacks.
- Animal shelters are overburdened with surplus animals.
When you adopt a homeless pet from DHS, it will be spayed/neutered. Spay/neuter is included in the adoption fee.
To apply to have your pet spayed/neutered by DHS, you must prove your family income level is under $25,000. If you are able to do this, you may apply on-line. Click on "Contact Us". Put the following information in the comments section: family income level is less than $25,000, number of pets to be spayed/neutered, sex of each pet, age of each pet. You will be contacted by DHS.
If you do not want to apply on-line or if you have not heard from DHS within a week, call DHS at 410-228-3090.
